Preparation The stage in which the individual makes a commitment to take action to change the behavior pattern and develops a plan and strategy for change.

An individual in the Precontemplation stage is satisfied with, or at least unwilling to disrupt, a current behavior pattern. Precontemplators are not considering change in the foreseeable future most often defined as a period of 6 months to a year. This applies whether change means adopting, modifying, or stopping a behavior. Change is seen as irrelevant, unwanted, not needed, or impossible to achieve (DiClemente, 1991; DiClemente & Velasquez, 2002). It matters little if the current behavior pattern involves cigarette smoking, eating a high-fat diet, physical inactivity, using illegal drugs, or abstaining from sexual activity.
