These differences are not insignificant and they have a bearing on how the films come to have meaning for the viewer. Indeed, a significant quality of much animation is that: the physical qualities of the materials from which the imagery is made, processed by the animator’s frame-by-frame construction of a separate temporal reality, can help viewers access a sense of the original experience and/or story that inspired the work (Hayes, 2012: 217). Animated images, in their non-indexicality (or alternative indexicality) do not directly point to or connect to reality.

2 Digital Realities Battle 360, a 2008 History Channel series, combines digital animation with archival material and interviews to construct a kinetic and at times spectacular representation of the exploits of a US naval aircraft carrier during World War Two. The credit sequence begins with a number of breathtaking animated ‘aerial shots’. We swoop down the side of the computer-generated USS Enterprise before swiftly zip panning up to see a squadron of enemy aircraft zeroing in on the ship and, just as quickly, we are in the position of the pilots, seeing the Enterprise as we nosedive towards the sea.

As Paul Ward (2008: para. 9) has observed, ‘the very constructedness of animation might be the key to a specific mode of address that can elude live action documentary filmmaking, precisely because of the expectations that the indexical link – and apparent transparency – can raise’ (emphasis in original). This means that astute and imaginative creative choices of how to visually represent, interpret and infer reality can enable truth claims of a different order to live-action documentary. Photorealism, metaphor and metamorphosis, for example, can allow us to see or 40 Animated Documentary imagine aspects of reality that cannot be shown through conventional means.
