JC: In my teaching at NYU, I show my animation students works in many art forms and relate great stage and film performances, graphic and fine arts, music, poetry, dance, and mime to animation by finding levels and similarities in communication principles common to all art forms. BS: I started off wanting to do a traditional rotoscoping approach, where I wanted to be able to take some video on a computer and step through it frame by frame and just draw on each frame. If you know graphics programming, that’s a pretty simple program to write. At that time, back in 1997, MTV was looking for submissions for a contest; Beavis and Butt-Head had just ended and they were looking for ideas for a new show. The contest required a 90-second submission of a character talking to the screen about him or herself.
