JC: Images are shot or scanned in from the storyboard, then a “scratch” or preliminary soundtrack (in this case, a voiceover) is added and the drawings are timed so that they change sequentially according to audio cues. The purpose of making an animatic is to view the whole film in sequence and in real time in order to assess the story structure and character development; and to show the work-in-progress to potential funders. JK: Did you use any digital technology in making this project?

Animation by Bob Sabiston. BS: I think because it started out as portraits of people’s personalitiesdsort of like a moving life drawingdI come at it from a perspective of what’s interesting visually. That kind of thing usually just happens in the moment, while you’re sitting there working. I think a lot of the initial projects we did were about freedom to the animator. It’s important to me to let the artists have creative freedom. I always disliked the whole storyboard/model sheet idea of taking artists and making them draw a certain way.
